Are Internet links in real-world advertising today’s “fresh fish sold here?”

In 1997/8 it was probably very exciting to be able to put a URL on a poster, or in a magazine ad. Oh look— we have a web site! (It was about the same time that every MBA who knew anything about the Internet was able…

Ed will be responsible for scaling the business and building out an ecosystem across content owners, brands, app developers, agencies and other partners.

Ed brings more than fifteen years of technology and mobile experience to Delivr. After founding a messaging company (ePostings) and working in the VoIP space, he spent six years at Microsoft, launching the first version of both Live Communications Server and Communicator, and then building the product strategy for Bing Mobile. After Microsoft, Ed moved to Nokia, where he was responsible for strategy and business development within the services group, as well as working on new products and M&A in local commerce, mobile app, address book, and social music.

Delivr shortens links and creates QR codes, 2D barcodes that can be scanned using a smartphone and reader application, which is readily available at app stores. Once scanned, QR codes can launch URLs, mobile pages, and initiate phone calls or downloads. Delivr allows customers to manage QR campaigns, with specific codes going to particular locations or publications, and then provides actionable analytics as users interact with the codes in the real world.

Ed said, “Delivr is leading the way in real-world analytics and the team has built a great platform for growth. Smartphones are the natural way to bring the power of the Internet into the real world, and more and more people are taking advantage of that capability. I am thrilled to be working on providing services for companies building those mobile to real-world interactions.”

David Harper, Delivr’s founder, who remains responsible for Delivr’s product, said, “We are delighted to be bringing Ed on board at this stage of the company’s growth. I am confident that under Ed’s leadership, we can build on the foundation we have, and create a world-class company. Ed’s experience in mobile at industry giants like Nokia and Microsoft complements and builds on the skills we already have in the team, and will enable us to scale rapidly.”

About Delivr
Delivr is unlocking the value of the smartphone as the link between the real and on-line worlds. Delivr works with content owners, brands and application developers to enhance real-world interactions, providing campaign management, analytics and other services. Today Delivr offers a great QR Code and NFC Tag solution, managing and tracking campaigns across more than 100 countries worldwide. Delivr is based in New York and San Francisco.

The Smartphone in the Real World

by Ed Simnett

Smartphones are enabling more and more people to interact richly and efficiently with the world around them. A standard response today to “what’s this?”, “how much is it?”, “when’s that?”, or “how do I?” is to get out the phone and expect it to produce a smart answer, which, more and more, it does. Smartphones are enabling people to scan bar and QR (quick response) codes, tap NFC (near field communications) tags, experience Augmented Reality, locate themselves on maps, and do sophisticated Visual and Voice search. Even the humble SMS short code is often a way for someone to react to something they see in the real world (or the TV). All of these experiences have the potential to bring the power of the Internet into the real world in a personal and relevant way.

What sort of experiences are we talking about? SMS short codes have been used for TV voting and special offers. QR codes are found in bus stops (when’s the next bus?), on billboards and posters (movie showtimes and trailers, and interactive ads), in newspapers, magazines and inserts (coupons and special offers), in museums (identifying exhibits), at conferences and on wedding invitations (locations and schedules), and (thank you GoDaddy) on the TV screen. NFC is emerging and promises even more, with a strong emphasis on payments.

Rather than static printed information these new mobile-enhanced experiences are on-demand from a user’s point of view— what you want and no more— and can be customized by the content owner to the reader, time of day, location or other criteria. That adaptability and targeting is taken for granted on-line— it’s coming to the real world, via the smartphone.

To deliver great experiences content owners, application developers, and brands start by “attaching” their rich, Internet-based information to the real world, via QR code, NFC tag or the like. Then, to make this useful and actionable, they need analytics to understand how, where, and when that information is being accessed. It is with those real-world analytics that the experiences can be enhanced and developed over time.

It’s already clear a wide variety of technologies will play a role in tagging and enhancing the real world. Sometimes discussion of this is couched in dramatic language; we hear that QR codes are going to destroy short code SMS, and then augmented reality, visual search and NFC will replace QR codes. At the end of the day there is a role for many types of interaction, they are all solving similar fundamental problems.

What’s exciting to me is simply the way the power of the Internet can enhance real-world experiences. Bringing the Internet into the world is the value to consumers, exactly how that happens is not the important thing. Over the next few years the interactions will become more and more seamless, as phones and other devices are better and better connected. I am excited to be part of this.

When someone scans a QR Code with your reader, please stop loading the page people are trying to visit within your reader. Various JavaScript and location prompts necessary for page display, location, or other services to work are blocked as a result. A scan of a URL-type code is best launched on the phone’s native browser.

While it is true your reader may allow the person scanning the code to break the intended URL out of your reader - I suspect most people do not realize they could or should do that.

The average consumer will never understand why something is not working properly and brands are getting annoyed that their carefully crafted experiences are being bastardized by you.

If the person accepts, Device GPS location is captured along with the accuracy of that location measured in feet/meters.

If the person does not accept, location identification falls back to lookup of location based on the IP address of the carrier gateway or WiFi network used to access the destination URL encoded in the QR Code. IP lookup is accurate up to city, state, and country.

No App or download is required by the person scanning the code. The location check-in service is 100% mobile Web browser-based. The location check-in service can be toggled ON/OFF on a per QR Code basis at any point during a QR Campaign. This service is also available for use for those using Delivr Short URLs.

Use of this service is available to all registered users. Registration is free.
“For the band’s new album, “21st Century Breakdown,” Green Day employed QR codes in magazine ads, posters, stickers and more. The QR code directs users to a special mobile site that enables the downloading of exclusive images and videos. The group partnered with Delivr to provide the content and media. “
