I’m not sure when the mural above first appeared in Vancouver, British Columbia. But I recently noticed a QR code painted over an offending tag that had been sprayed on the mural. Remarkably, the QR Code takes you to an image of the mural before it was vandalized.

Dear QR Code Reader Companies.
Please stop wrapping ads around the pages you load within your reader after a person scans a code.
This action causes confusion for consumers and hurts the intended content and messaging.
I get that you are struggling for a revenue model but wrapping ads around the pages of others will not result in any good for you or the ecosystem.
You know who you are.

Dear QR Code Reader Companies.
When someone scans a QR Code with your reader, please stop loading the page people are trying to visit within your reader. Various JavaScript and location prompts necessary for page display, location, or other services to work are blocked as a result. A scan of a URL-type code is best launched on the phone’s native browser.
While it is true your reader may allow the person scanning the code to break the intended URL out of your reader - I suspect most people do not realize they could or should do that.
The average consumer will never understand why something is not working properly and brands are getting annoyed that their carefully crafted experiences are being bastardized by you.
You know who you are.
